There are many things in our society being used as sleight of hand to distract us from what the real problem is besides immigration. One of those distractions is in ignoring the simple fact that most of these people would not immigrate here if we weren't destroying the countries they come from. Immigration must be done legally (especially medical examinations). They must bring something to the table we don’t already have—no H1B visas to replace American workers like Bill Gates does, and all immigrants must pay their own way (or have a sponsor other than Uncle Sam). We have enough home grown bums living on the tax payer's dollar as it is. I would say they must assimilate as previous generations of immigrants did, but we have no unifying culture to assimilate to anymore. My wife is an immigrant, and it cost me plenty moneywise, in addition to the harassment and degradation we had to endure at the hand of the immigration service.
I live in South Dakota and was visiting with a resident of Minnesota. When the discussion turned to how bad Minneapolis had gotten, the explanation was the Somalis. "It has gotten so bad that the school district has become a majority-minority district." My initial thoughts asked myself why that was bad, since I had attended an "all-black" college in Virginia for a quarter, but we went on to other topics. Your article was very helpful to my understanding. As you well illustrate Iowa is not an isolated problem. Thank you!
